JUST FOR TODAY:

I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle all my problems at once.  I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY:
I will will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, namely that "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study.

I will not be a mental loafer.
I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires.  I will take my luck as it comes, and fit myself into it.

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out. I will do at least two things I don't want to--just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt; they may be hurt, but today I will not show it

JUST FOR TODAY:

 I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will have a quiet half hour all by myself, and relax. During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life.

JUST FOR TODAY:

I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

A Note from Bill:
My source for the above "Just for Today" affirmations is a site with the heading:Words of wisdom from by Kenneth L. Holmes which inspire us to just live one day at a time.

I'm not familiar with Mr. Holmes, and efforts to seek his identity didn't pan out, although there are many "Kenneth L. Holmes" cited. Most such citations related to an individual by that name who was a well-known author. Tthere was, however, no indication that he was also the source of daily meditations such as these.

I am aware that "Just for Today" is a tried and true principle for twelve-step programs. The concept is, however, applicable to all of us, whether or not we are prone to addictions which require daily meeting regimens.

I am grateful for the reinforcement of my long-held conviction that we all need to live "daily" as opposed to in the past, or the future.

The "Just for Today" concept is often reinforced with the "Serenity Prayer" by the late Reinhold Niehbuhr, which reads as follows:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

(Although known most widely in its abbreviated form above,
the entire prayer also includes the following)

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.
